Q&A with Eliza

HipHopCanada: How do you define hip-hop, and where do you feel you fit into that definition?

Eliza: Hip-hop to me is a lifestyle, its a culture. There are so many sub-genres within hip-hop. Hip-hop is so real and can be so raw and so beautiful all at the same time. I was attracted to hip-hop at a very young age because it made me feel at peace. I feel I fit in because I’m not trying to be anyone but me. Music is my temple and I’ve had a lot of struggles in my life and I feel hip-hop gives me the chance to express myself in the realest and most honest ways.

HipHopCanada: What drives you to stay in a business that is rarely profitable and highly competitive?

Eliza: What drives me is the love of music. I just get so much satisfaction from it. Its not what I do its who I am so I’ll never stop doing what I’m doing. I’m constantly inspired and always striving to learn more and improve my craft. So if I make it big or not, I’ll always have music in my life.

HipHopCanada: Where are you based specifically?

Eliza: I was born on Vancouver Island and grew up on Gabriola Island and now I’m currently living in Van City.

HipHopCanada: How has living there influenced your sound?

Eliza: I don’t know how much its influenced my sound. I think its more the struggles I’ve faced that have influenced me more then where I’m from but saying that there are definitely many musicians/artist in Vancouver that inspire me all the time.

HipHopCanada: Who is your primary fan base?

Eliza: Really, I have a very diverse fan base from all different ages from all different places. Its really anyone has a love for R&B/hip-hop and soul.

HipHopCanada: What tips would you give young artists coming up or what do you wish someone would have told you when you first started out in the hip-hop industry?

Eliza: First and foremost would be to make music that you love – because if you spend your life doing what you love, but have no success, you at least spent your life doing something you enjoy. But if you stay true to you and your style and you strive to be your authentic self, most likely you will find success. When your passion is your work you can put endless time and energy into something you truly love and it will never seem like a job. Also, be open minded to other artists and allow yourself to be inspired by interesting musicians and styles.
